Sedentary lifestyle and obesity have made diabetes a household disease today. While most diabetics in the western countries are overweight and obese, it does not hold true for India. A recent study suggests that 20-30 percent of diabetics in India are non-obese or even lean. Indians, even though not overly obese, are normal weight- high body fat and have excess fat in their abdominal organs such as liver and pancreas. This results in poor functioning of insulin hormones leading to a rise in blood sugar.
