Did you know that there are different types of walking? And one of the differences is whether or not you can talk while you walk.
Brisk walking is walking at a pace faster than normal where the heart rate goes up. You should be able to have a conversation with someone, but just about. It is also likely that you will sweat a little. For most people brisk walking starts with a pace of about 5kmph, although the actual pace will vary from person to person. Brisk walking is a moderate-intensity activity, which means that your heart rate will be at 50 to 75% of the maximum heart rate.
A group of Professors led by Catherine Tudor Locke from the British Sports Journal of Medicine used an easier way to understand brisk walking. They used cadence(steps/minute) as a measure of brisk walking. Using the results from 38 different studies, they concluded that for most adults 100 steps in a minute can be defined as brisk walking.
If you take 100 steps a minute, you’re actually walking at a speed of 4.3km per hr. The authors of the study could also calculate the precise speed of a person by taking into account the height and stature related characteristics of that individual.
According to this study, any pace till about 130 steps a minute can be called vigorous activity. Jogging begins around 140 steps a minute.
