Cycling is an intense form of exercise and yet it does not lead to the same number of injuries as other sports like running. However, it is important to be aware of the kind of issues or injuries that can crop up during cycling.
1. The riskiest injuries happen in cycling from falls and crashes. Some of them can become very serious. To keep yourself safe always wear a helmet and stay alert. In fact, a helmet is the best thing you can wear to reduce the level of injuries in the event of a fall or an accident. When riding, concentrate on the road, route, signals, moving & stationary traffic & on your riding. Be alert at all times!
2. Many cyclists get back and shoulder pains from the constant hunching. This can be minimized by strengthening your core muscles (Bridges, Planks, Superman, etc. – look up our blog on stretching and strengthening exercises)
3.A common occurrence amongst cyclists is knee and back pain. This can be eliminated by ensuring that your cycle fits with your posture and height. This can be done by saddle and angle adjustments in a professional set-up. An extended arm or a short arm distance to the handlebars can also cause these issues so always choose the right size of the cycle for yourself
4.Your eyes need protection from insects, sun glare, and dust. Invest in a pair of good sunglasses to keep your eyes happy as you ride
